Philosophy department started its career in 1993. The first graduates studied in the field of Islamic Philosophy and Hikmat in bachelor level. This group started to enroll students in the fields of Islamic Philosophy and Theology and Philosophy of Religion in the years 2007 and 2008 in Master level. In addition, it was in 1390 that Philosophy of Ethics was added to the list. Thanks to the scientific board of this group, the PhD program in the field of Islamic Philosophy and Theology began in 2013. The Elmi-Pajuheshi journal of Philosophical Meditations started its activities in 2010 and could eventually be indexed as Elmi-pajuheshi in 2014. At the moment, this department is going further in its career with 7 scientific boards, and also over 200 students in bachelor, master and PhD programs.

The Philosophy department began its educational activities in 1993, admitting students in Islamic Philosophy at BA level. This department also admitted students in Philosophy & Islamic Theology and Religion Philosophy at MA level in 2007 and 2008. Following that, this department obtained the license for MA program in Ethics Philosophy in 2011. For the credibility of academic members, the Philosophy department was successful in obtaining the license for the PhD program in Philosophy & Islamic Theology in 2013. The department’s professional journal called “Philosophical Thoughts” started publishing in 2010 and succeeded in achieving the title of “Scientific Research” journal as the first journal at university in July 2014.

Currently, the Philosophy department comprises 7 permanent academic members (3 assistant professors, 4 associate professors (and more than 200 students at BA, MA and PhD levels.

Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy began its activities in 1372 (1993) by admitting students at the bachelor's level in the field of Theology Teaching, with a specialization in Islamic Philosophy; in 1388 (2009), this field was changed to Bachelor's in Islamic Philosophy and Wisdom. In the years 1386 and 1387 (2007 and 2008), the department admitted students at the master's level in the specializations of "Islamic Philosophy and Theology" and "Philosophy of Religion," and subsequently, in 1390 (2011), it obtained the license for the master's program in "Moral Philosophy." By virtue of its faculty members, the department succeeded in obtaining the license to hold the doctoral program in "Islamic Philosophy and Theology" in 1392 (2013).

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Zanjan proposed the project of philosophical counseling for the first time in the country, and for several years philosophical counseling services—even in the area of treating individual and social problems—have been offered to students with the authorization of the Student Vice-Chancellery of this university. In fact, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Zanjan is the originator of this type of counseling in the country, and scientific articles in this area have been published by some professors of this department in reputable journals. Also, the Department of Philosophy at the University of Zanjan has been active in teaching Philosophy for Children (P4C) to students and endeavors, by teaching applied Philosophy for Children to students, to take steps in promoting Philosophy for Children in kindergartens.

The specialized quarterly "Philosophical Reflections" began publication in 1389 (2010) and finally, in Tir 1393 (July 2014), as the first journal at the university, succeeded in obtaining scientific-research (academic) rank.

The quarterly "Ethical Reflections" was launched at the beginning of 1398 (2019) with the aim of promoting ethics in society, expanding ethical studies and research, and creating a basis for publishing the latest original achievements of researchers in the field of ethics and moral philosophy. This journal is published in Persian.

The journal "Ethical Reflections" succeeded on 19/8/1400 (November 10, 2021) in obtaining scientific rank from the Office of the Publications Commission of the Policy-Making and Planning Office for Research Affairs of the Research Vice-Chancellery of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the result of its evaluation in 1399 (2020) was a "B" rank.

Among other activities of this department, one can mention the establishment of the department's specialized library, the holding of national conferences "Commemoration of Suhrawardi" (1389/2010), "Ethical Thoughts in the Contemporary World" (1390/2011), "Applied Ethics" (1391/2012), and "Ethics and Manners of Life" (1393/2014), as well as workshops on "Philosophy of Mathematics" (1388/2009), "Analysis of the Foundations of Modern Science" (1391/2012), "Research Ethics" (1392/2013), and "Scientific Ethics" (1394/2015).
